How to Clean Marble Countertops Without Damaging Them

Updated: Apr 27, 2023

Marble countertops are beautiful and have a unique look compared to other natural stone countertops. However, marble is more sensitive than other natural stones, like granite, and it requires extra special care to keep it in mint condition. But that doesn’t mean you should rule out marble as a countertop mafterial for your home. In this guide, we’ll provide you with steps on how to clean marble countertops safely and tips to keep them looking as good as new.

How to Clean Marble Countertops Safely

Marble Cleaning

Follow these steps to clean marble countertops without damaging them:

1. Spray the countertop with a neutral cleaner

Marble is a relatively soft stone, meaning acidic cleaners can etch its surface. Etching happens when acidic substances corrode marble and alter its texture and appearance.

As a result, avoid using acidic or all-purpose cleaners to clean marble countertops. Instead, spray the countertops with a neutral cleaner specially formulated for natural stone surfaces. Alternatively, spray the countertop with water and dish soap solution.

2. Clean the countertop with a cloth

Use a non-abrasive microfiber cloth or sponge to wipe any spills, stains, or food debris on the countertop.

3. Dry the countertop

Remove any remaining soapy water or neutral cleaner on the countertop with an absorbent microfiber cloth or paper towel. Wipe down the surface until it completely dries, as moisture can stain the marble.

How to Clean Stubborn Stains on Marble Countertops

Certain stains like wine or coffee may not easily come off marble using the cleaning procedure above. To eliminate stubborn stains on marble, follow these steps:

1. Make a paste with flour and water

Place one cup of flour into a bowl and add two tablespoons of dish soap. Then, gradually pour water into the bowl as you stir the mixture to make a thick paste.

2. Smear the paste onto the stain and cover it

Paint the paste onto the tough stain. Then, place plastic wrap over the paste and press it down to expel any air. Let the paste sit on the stain overnight.

3. Wipe off the paste and clean the surface

Lift the plastic wrap and remove the paste with a non-abrasive microfiber cloth or sponge. Then, spray soapy water or neutral cleaner onto the surface and wipe it with a cloth or sponge. Finally, remove any remaining moisture with an absorbent cloth.

How to Protect Marble Countertops

Since marble countertops are more prone to staining and etching than other natural stone countertops, here are some key things to keep in mind to increase their longevity:

Wipe spills immediately

Clean spills right away to keep marble stain-free. Be particularly quick to wipe acidic substances like lemon juice, vinegar, or tomato sauce because they etch marble.

Use cutting boards

Marble countertops scratch easily. To prevent scratches on the surface, use a cutting board when chopping ingredients.

Use a coaster

Place glasses on coasters as moisture can leave streaks on marble countertops.

Use a trivet

Put a trivet beneath hot cookware to prevent heat from damaging the marble.

Apply sealant

Marble is a relatively porous natural stone. As a result, it requires regular sealing. Seal marble countertops at least once annually to prevent water, oil, and other liquids from seeping into the stone and leaving stains.

Installing marble countertops can feel daunting because they’re considered high maintenance. Fortunately, cleaning and protecting marble isn’t difficult. Use these tips to clean marble countertops and keep them in tip-top shape.
